Bad News, Kimosabe

The title says it all.

I went to an orthopedist today about my knee.

He, it turns out, does not suspect the I-T band issue that I was suspecting...he thinks I might have a meniscus tear. (And, after all, he is the one who went to med school.)

That sounds much more serious, doesn't it? I almost started crying right there in his office.

He basically said that the "responsible, adult" thing to do is to stop running until we know for certain if there's tear or not. When he saw that I was about to start crying in front of a stranger, he backtracked the tiniest bit--he said that we needed to "rule out" a tear by having an MRI done. When those scans come back normal, then he can give me an injection in my knee to make it feel better to get me through the race (and I suppose then I need to seek more permanent help/therapy for my knee after the half-marathon).

Unfortunately, I don't think that he thinks those scans are going to come back normal.

And he didn't really go into detail about what the gameplan is in that case.

And I was too afraid to ask. But I'm guessing it means minor surgery of some sort, which would probably take me out of the running (Ha ha, get it? "Out of the running"? Sorry, I gotta get my laughs where I can today...) for the half-marathon.

So tomorrow morning I'm having the MRI done, and hopefully they'll get those results back to the dr. very quickly and hopefully he'll call me with good news very quickly after that.

Until then, I'm allowed to go swim.

Ick, yuck, boo!!! That sucks, Kimmie. No two ways about it. And, you're right. Surgery is the cure for a miniscus tear. But it's not too bad. A friend of mine had hers repaired last year. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, though!! Let us know what the MRI results are.
