A Mother in Good Standing Again

Now that things are finally back on track here at Casa Zustiak, we have managed to get my son's 5th birthday pictures taken (and only 26 days late!). As I uploaded the photos into Picasa, it occurred to me that I never did one of those sappy retrospectives that I'm so partial to in honor of Connor's birthday. Sorry I'm so behind the times on the birthday thing, here. But, I had to make sure I got this in (otherwise, I couldn't do this for Riley's birthday next month--gotta be equal!). So, in my quest to make his birthday a month-long celebration, here you go.

Unfortunately, I don't have any hospital photos to include here. I have some in the scrap book, and somewhere there exists a set of cds with photos of my first-born's first week on this earth. About 2-3 times a year I think, "I'm going to reorganize, and surely I'll come across those discs." Well friends, I've reorganized and de-cluttered my desk, my photo albums, my photo storage and my scrap-booking supplies so many times in the last five years that it ceases to be funny. There can only be one explanation: these alleged cds were sacrificed to the moving gods when we moved into this house almost 5 years ago.

So I must start with the following pictures, and we shall hold out hope that next year, on my son's 6th birthday, the blogosphere can enjoy the beauty that is me mere hours after having given birth. Enjoy:

6 weeks old (in his Osh Kosh overalls--just like Great-Grandpa's)

8 months old--he's always had a lot of hair; He's been getting monthly hair cuts since he was 5 months old! Thank heavens for cousin Jessica and her stash of dum-dums!

Here is what my little man is like at the ripe old age of five:

He will go to kindergarten this fall. He will walk into that classroom knowing all of his letters and numbers and how to write them. He can spell, read and write several words now. He loves sounding words out (thanks to Super Why and Word World).

He thinks he's into Transformers, but he really just likes the idea of them. He still prefers his cars and Thomas trains, although it won't be long before he'll really be ready to give those up for things like video games and Transformers (and when he's able to figure out how the Transformers work without any assistance from me, then he's welcome to play with them!).

He really needs to work on distinguishing between his inside and outside voices, and learning when to use which.

He still takes a good long nap (the boy knows what's good for him--and what's good for Mom) practically every day, but he can skip it when the need arises.

He's afraid of the dark.

He LOVES to snuggle. I keep thinking that he's going to outgrow the desire to snuggle any day now, but he always has to get his recommended daily allowance. And Mom's more than happy to oblige! I'm stockpiling for the not-too-distant future, when he won't want to snuggle anymore.

He enjoys helping his sister (most of the time). He will make a great Dad one day--he seems to think that he's Riley's dad most of the time now. He'll be the best older brother in the world when they get to middle school/high school if his relationship with his sister stays on the course it's on now.

He is a fantastic musician! He loves to sing and he's quite good at it (if I do say so myself). I think he will have great stage presence one day--I think we will have quite the musical star on our hands!

He loves to learn! He asks questions, particularly about language--definitions, spellings, etc. He truly enjoys learning new things and sharing that knowledge with us.

He loves to help. At school, at home, he LOVES to be the "helper". On the rare occasion that I cook, you will find him attempting to help me. (Maybe I can eventually parlay this into him cooking sans me!)

Okay, so that's my little man in a nutshell.

Now I have to go and explain to him what the phrase "in a nutshell" means.
